Goal: To use social activities to hear and perform dynamics.


Out of Tempo

Spoken

Beginning

First me then you

  1. Teacher speaks a sentence soft, medium, or loud.
  2. Students speak the same sentence soft, medium, or loud.
  3. Process continues until soft, medium tempi have been exchanged.

Intermediate

  1. Student speaks a sentence soft, medium, or loud.
  2. Teacher speaks the same soft, medium, or loud.
  3. Process continues until soft, medium dynamics have been exchanged.

Advanced

Going around the room – one student at a time.

  1. Teacher prompts, “Students work in pairs and choose a leader and a follower. Students repeat the above process.”
  2. Students pair off and repeat the above process.

In Tempo

Same exercise – sung, played, in two-four, three-four, or four-four.

Students in metered tempo, conducting as they speak.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sings three to five notes in x meter, in x dynamic.
  2. Students sing the same notes in the same meter and dynamic.
  3. Process continues until soft, medium, and loud dynamics have been exchanged.

Intermediate

  1. Student sings three to five notes in x meter, in x dynamic.
  2. Teacher sings the same note in the same meter and dynamic.
  3. Process continues until soft, medium, and loud dynamics have been exchanged.

Advanced

Going around the room – two students at a time.
