Goal: To hear dynamics by altering the rates at which they change.
Out of Tempo
Beginning
Speaking – could be playing but not in a specific tempo.
- Teacher hums a sound softly.
- Student repeats same sound softly.
- Teacher prompts, “Repeat same sound, when I say ‘change’ you suddenly get louder.”
- Student repeats sound.
- Teacher prompts, “Change.”
- Student changes the dynamic suddenly get softer.
Intermediate
- Teacher hums a sound loudly.
- Student repeats same sound loudly.
- Teacher prompts, “Repeat same sound, when I say ‘change’ you suddenly get softer.”
- Student repeats sound.
- Teacher prompts, “Change.”
- Student changes the dynamic suddenly.
Advanced
- Teacher hums a sound medium.
- Student repeats same sound medium.

- Teacher hums or sings a note and prompts students to repeat.
- Students repeat.
- Teacher prompts students, “Repeat your sound and when I say ‘change’ you change the sound suddenly in tempo.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher says, “Change.”
- Students change dynamic.
