Harmonic Progressions: Change
Goal: To hear and perform chord progressions by chord changes with a changing bass line in root position only.
Out of Tempo
Spoken, sung, or played.
Beginning
- Teacher speaks a bass line in letter names (C, F, G, C for example).
- The students repeat in roman numerals or chord names.
- The teacher prompts, change the bass line to tonic, supertonic, dominant, tonic.
- Students speak the changed bass line.
Intermediate
- Teacher prompts, “Change the one, four, five, one progression to a minor key.”
- Students speak, sing, or play the progression to a minor key.
Advanced
- Students choose a progression in major or minor key and change it to a different progression as a bass line from among those in the harmonic progression repertoire for Ear Training One.
Choices: one, four, five, one, or one, six, four, five, one
In Tempo
Spoken, sung, or played in a slow tempo in two-four, three-four, or four-four time one bass note per measure.
Beginning
- Teacher sets up a time signature in a slow tempo in C major one note per measure and prompts, “Change the progression to minor.”
- Students change the progression to minor.
- The process continues in other keys.
Intermediate
- Teacher sets up a time signature in a slow tempo in C minor one note per measure and prompts, “Change the progression to major.”
- Students change the progression to minor.
- The process continues in other keys.
Advanced
- Students choose a progression in major or minor key other than C major or minor and change it to a different progression as a bass line from among those in the harmonic progression repertoire for Ear Training I.
