Melody: Call and Response



Goal: To use social contexts to develop melodic nuance in phrase structures — multi-note chains.


Out of Tempo

Speaking – numbers, letters, solfege, “high or low”

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks, "1."
  2. Students respond, "1."
  3. Process repeats with teacher speaking two numbers, leading and students following using numbers, in this example, to include 1 to 8, out of sequence.

Intermediate

  1. Student speaks, "1."
  2. Teacher respond, "1."
  3. Process repeats with student speaking two numbers, leading and the teacher following using numbers, in this example, to include 1 to 8, out of sequence.

Advanced

  1. Students pair off and trade numbers in growing combinations of numbers.

In Tempo

Singing or playing in 2, 3, or 4 time, one note per measure at first.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sings a four note melody, one note per measure.
  2. Students sing the same four note melody.

Intermediate

  1. Students sing a four note melody, one note per measure.
  2. Teacher sings the same four note melody.

Advanced

  1. Students pair off and trade four note melodies, one note per measure.
