Goal: To use social contexts to develop melodic nuance in phrase structures — multi-note chains.
Out of Tempo
Speaking – numbers, letters, solfege, “high or low”
Beginning
- Teacher speaks, "1."
- Students respond, "1."
- Process repeats with teacher speaking two numbers, leading and students following using numbers, in this example, to include 1 to 8, out of sequence.
Intermediate
- Student speaks, "1."
- Teacher respond, "1."
- Process repeats with student speaking two numbers, leading and the teacher following using numbers, in this example, to include 1 to 8, out of sequence.
Advanced
- Students pair off and trade numbers in growing combinations of numbers.
In Tempo
Singing or playing in 2, 3, or 4 time, one note per measure at first.
Beginning
- Teacher sings a four note melody, one note per measure.
- Students sing the same four note melody.
Intermediate
- Students sing a four note melody, one note per measure.
- Teacher sings the same four note melody.
Advanced
- Students pair off and trade four note melodies, one note per measure.
