Meter: Arithmetic



Goal: To hear time signatures using arithmetic concepts.


Out of Tempo

Addition

Beginning

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to two.
  2. Students repeat and add one (2 + 1 = 3).
  3. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to three.
  4. Students repeat and add one (3 + 1 = 4).
  5. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to four.
  6. Students repeat and add one (4 + 1 = 5).

Intermediate

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to two.
  2. Teacher prompts student to add a different number.
  3. Student repeats two and adds a different number (For example: 2 + 3 = 5).

Advanced

  1. Teacher mixes claps/ta’s, counting to an odd number: clap and ta, for example.
  2. Teacher prompts, “Repeat my number and add an even number mixing the activity.”
  3. Students repeat odd number and add an even number mixing the activity.

Subtraction

Beginning

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to two.
  2. Students repeat and subtract a number (2 – 1 = 1).
  3. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to three.
  4. Students repeat and subtract one (3 – 1 = 2).
  5. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to four.
  6. Students repeat and subtract one (4 – 1 = 3).

Intermediate

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks numbers to four.
  2. Teacher prompts students to subtract a different number.
  3. Student repeats and subtracts a different number (4 – 3 = 1).

Advanced

  1. Teacher mixes claps/ta’s/counting to an even number.
  2. Teacher prompts, “Repeat my number and subtract an odd number.”
  3. Students repeat even number and subtract an even number.

Multiplication

Beginning

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks to four.
  2. Teacher prompts student to repeat the combination four times (4 x 4 = 16).
  3. Students repeat.
  4. This is repeated in different combinations (4 x 3 = 12), (4 x 2 = 8).

Intermediate

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks to four.
  2. Teacher prompts.
  3. Student repeats.

Advanced

  1. Teacher mixes activities to combine an odd number and an even number.
  2. Teacher prompts, “Repeat my combination and repeat four times.” (2 + 3 x 4 = 20)
  3. Students repeat combination and repeat four times.

Division

Beginning

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks to four.
  2. Teacher prompts, "Divide in half."
  3. Students repeat then divide in half.
  4. This is repeated in different combinations.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher claps/ta’s/speaks to four.
  2. Teacher prompts, "Divide each sound in half."
  3. Students repeat four and divide each sound in half.

Advanced

  1. Teacher mixes activities to four repetitions of four in 2 + 2 combinations of activities.
  2. Teacher prompts students to divide total number in half and switching the order of the activities. (2 claps + 2 ta’s x 4 = 16)
  3. Students repeat teacher’s combination (2 claps + 2 ta’s x 4 = 16) then repeat (2 ta’s = 2 claps x 2 = 8).

In Tempo

Place the appropriate accent on each beat. Downbeat, mid-beat, and up beat should all sound and feel different from one another.
