Meter: Call and Response
Goal: To create awareness of different durations of measures and weights of the downbeat.
Out of Tempo
Spoken – names, numbers, soflege, letters, played.
Can be spoken in scalar sequence or out of sequence.
Beginning
- Teacher speaks, “One (low voice), two (higher voice).”
- Students repeat.
- Process repeats with counting to 2, 3, or 4 using low voice for "one" and higher voice for the other numbers.
Intermediate
- Student speaks, “One (low voice), two (higher voice).”
- Teacher repeats.
- Process repeats with counting to 2, 3, or 4 using low voice for "one" and higher voice for the other numbers.
Advanced
- Teacher pairs off students and they lead and follow each other.
- Students pair off and lead and follow.
In Tempo
Sung, played in two-four, three-four, or four-four time.
Can be sung in scalar sequence or out of scalar sequence.
Beginning
- Teacher sings, “Doe” in 2, 3, or 4 time.
- Student responds sings, “Do.”
- Teacher sings, “Rey.”
- Student sings, “Rey.”
- Process continues until all notes of the tonality are sung.
Intermediate
- Student sings, “Doe.”
- Teacher responds sings, “Doe.”
- Process continues until all notes of the tonality are sung.
Advanced
- Teacher pairs off students.
- Students pair off and lead or follow using the same materials.
- Process continues until all notes of the tonality are sung.
