Rhythm: Call and Response



Goal: To share rhythm patterns in a social context.


Out of Tempo

One rhythm at a time.

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks a rhythm pattern (ta, rhythm words).
  2. Student responds.
  3. Teacher and student go back and forth on one rhythm.

Intermediate

  1. Student chooses a rhythm pattern.
  2. Teacher responds.
  3. Student and teacher go back and forth on one rhythm.

Advanced

  1. Students pair off and share leading and following on one rhythm.

In Tempo

Sung, played in two-four, three-four, four-four

Beginning

  1. Teacher performs a rhythm pattern in 2, 3, or 4 time.
  2. Student responds in 2, 3, or 4 time.
  3. Teacher and student go back and forth on one rhythm.

Intermediate

  1. Student performs a rhythm pattern.
  2. Teacher responds in 2, 3, or 4 time.
  3. Student and teacher go back and forth on one rhythm.

Advanced

  1. Students pair off and share leading and following on one rhythm.
