Rhythm: Change
Goal: To improve a sense of rhythm using the patterns of the rhythm grid.
Out of Tempo

Beginning
- Teacher prompts, “Here is a rhythm pattern. You repeat it and then change it.”
- Students repeat the pattern and change it.
Intermediate
- Teacher prompts, “Here is a rhythm pattern. Repeat it and then change it by reversing it.” For example: half, quarter, quarter becomes quarter, quarter, half.
- Students repeat the pattern and change it.
Advanced
- Teacher prompts, “Here is a rhythm pattern. Repeat the pattern and speak the pattern that is twice as fast." For example: walk run run becomes dactylic.
- Students repeat the pattern and change it.
In Tempo

- Teacher sets up a time signature and tempo and prompts, “I’ll perform a rhythm pattern. You repeat it. When I prompt, 'Change,' you change it in tempo to another rhythm pattern."
- Students repeat teacher’s pattern – teacher allows four or more measures of repetition before prompting change.
- Teacher prompts change.
- Students change pattern.
Intermediate
- Teacher sets up a time signature and tempo and prompts, “I’ll perform a rhythm pattern. You repeat it. When I prompt, 'Change,' you change it in tempo to another rhythm pattern."
- Students repeat teacher’s pattern – teacher allows two or more measures of repetition before prompting change.
