Scales: Patterning



Goal: To hear and sing scales in/as patterns of 2, 3 or 4 notes.


Out of Tempo

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks, “Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half" of the major scale interval pattern.
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher speaks, “Whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole” of the natural minor scale interval pattern.
  2. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher speaks, “Whole, half, whole, whole, half, augmented second, half” of the harmonic minor scale interval pattern.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher speaks the melodic minor scale interval pattern (up and down).
  4. Students repeat.

In Tempo

Sung using numbers, letters, or solfege

Beginning

  1. Teacher sings the pattern, “Doe Rey, Rey Mi, Mi Fa, Fa Sol, Sol La, La Ti, Ti Doe.” Up and down.
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher sings pattern, “Doe Rey Mi, Mi Fa Sol, Sol La Ti" then "Doe Ti La, La Sol Fa, Fa Mi Rey" then "Doe.”
  2. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher sings pattern, “Doe Rey Mi Fa," then "Sol La Ti Doe," then "Do Ti La Sol," then "Sol La Ti Doe.”
  2. Students repeat.
