Scales: Patterning
Goal: To hear and sing scales in/as patterns of 2, 3 or 4 notes.
Out of Tempo
Beginning
- Teacher speaks, “Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half" of the major scale interval pattern.
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
- Teacher speaks, “Whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole” of the natural minor scale interval pattern.
- Students repeat.
Advanced
- Teacher speaks, “Whole, half, whole, whole, half, augmented second, half” of the harmonic minor scale interval pattern.
- Students repeat.
- Teacher speaks the melodic minor scale interval pattern (up and down).
- Students repeat.
In Tempo
Sung using numbers, letters, or solfege
Beginning
- Teacher sings the pattern, “Doe Rey, Rey Mi, Mi Fa, Fa Sol, Sol La, La Ti, Ti Doe.” Up and down.
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
- Teacher sings pattern, “Doe Rey Mi, Mi Fa Sol, Sol La Ti" then "Doe Ti La, La Sol Fa, Fa Mi Rey" then "Doe.”
- Students repeat.
Advanced
- Teacher sings pattern, “Doe Rey Mi Fa," then "Sol La Ti Doe," then "Do Ti La Sol," then "Sol La Ti Doe.”
- Students repeat.
