Goal: To hear and differentiate tempi.


Out of Tempo

Tempo warm up using “The Name Game”

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks their own name slowly.
  2. Each student speaks their own name slowly.
  3. Teacher speaks their own name at a moderate speed.
  4. Each student speaks their own name at a moderate speed.
  5. Teacher speaks their own name quickly.
  6. Each student speaks their own name quickly.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher speaks their own name in three speeds: slowly, moderately, quickly.
  2. Each student speaks their own name in three speeds: slowly, moderately, quickly.

Advanced

  1. Teacher speaks their name in a different speed order.
  2. Each student speaks their name in a different speed order.

In Tempo

Singing, Playing

Teacher sets up a slow tempo, in two-four, three-four, or four-four time, one note per measure at first.

Addition

  1. Teacher sings or plays in a slow tempo and prompts, “Sing (my name) in my tempo and add a faster tempo.”
  2. Students do so.

Subtraction

  1. Teacher sings or plays in a slow tempo and prompts, “Sing this in my tempo and then sing it slower.”
  2. Students do so.

Multiplication

  1. Teacher sings or plays in a slow tempo and prompts, “Sing this in my tempo and then sing it twice as fast.”
  2. Students do so, checking with a metronome.

Division

  1. Teacher sings or plays in a fast tempo and prompts, “Sing this in my tempo and sing it twice as slow.”
  2. Students do so, checking with a metronome.
