Tempo: Change



Goal: To use timing (slow, medium, and fast) to build skills in tempo and tempo relationships.


Out of Tempo

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks a sentence in fast, medium, or slow.
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher prompts, “Repeat the same sentence three ways: fast, medium, and slow.”
  2. Students repeat as prompted.

Advanced

  1. Teacher prompts, “Speak three different sentences in the same tempo.”
  2. Students speak three different sentences in the same tempo.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Speak a different sentence in a different tempo."
  4. Students speak as prompted.

In Tempo

Singing or playing in two-four, three-four, or four-four time; fast, medium, or slow, one note per measure.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sings or plays three to five notes fast, medium, or slow.
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher prompts, “Repeat the same notes three ways: fast, medium, then slow.”
  2. Students repeat as prompted.

Advanced

  1. Teacher prompts, “Sing three to five different notes in the same tempo.”
  2. Students sing three to five different notes in the same tempo.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Sing different notes in a different tempo.”
  4. Students do so.
