Tempo: Change
Goal: To use timing (slow, medium, and fast) to build skills in tempo and tempo relationships.
Out of Tempo
Beginning
- Teacher speaks a sentence in fast, medium, or slow.
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
- Teacher prompts, “Repeat the same sentence three ways: fast, medium, and slow.”
- Students repeat as prompted.
Advanced
- Teacher prompts, “Speak three different sentences in the same tempo.”
- Students speak three different sentences in the same tempo.
- Teacher prompts, “Speak a different sentence in a different tempo."
- Students speak as prompted.
In Tempo
Singing or playing in two-four, three-four, or four-four time; fast, medium, or slow, one note per measure.
Beginning
- Teacher sings or plays three to five notes fast, medium, or slow.
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
- Teacher prompts, “Repeat the same notes three ways: fast, medium, then slow.”
- Students repeat as prompted.
Advanced
- Teacher prompts, “Sing three to five different notes in the same tempo.”
- Students sing three to five different notes in the same tempo.
- Teacher prompts, “Sing different notes in a different tempo.”
- Students do so.
