Tempo: Patterning
Goal: To use the concept of patterns to organize lesson plans about tempo.
Out of Tempo
Beginning
Patterns of up or down, from left to right, right to left – teaching beat placement, contour.
- Teacher claps a basic rhythm pattern in two locations. The clapping pattern can be up or down or from left to right, etc.
- Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.
Intermediate
- Teacher claps two (or more) basic rhythms per location in space at three locations.
- Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.
Advanced
- Teacher mixes claps of two or more basic rhythms in four different locations.
- Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.
In Tempo

Advanced
- Teacher mixes claps of two or more basic rhythms in four different locations in a meter and tempo.
