Tempo: Patterning



Goal: To use the concept of patterns to organize lesson plans about tempo.


Out of Tempo

Beginning

Patterns of up or down, from left to right, right to left – teaching beat placement, contour.

  1. Teacher claps a basic rhythm pattern in two locations. The clapping pattern can be up or down or from left to right, etc.
  2. Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher claps two (or more) basic rhythms per location in space at three locations.
  2. Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.

Advanced

  1. Teacher mixes claps of two or more basic rhythms in four different locations.
  2. Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.

In Tempo

  2. Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.

  2. Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.

Advanced

  1. Teacher mixes claps of two or more basic rhythms in four different locations in a meter and tempo.
  2. Students repeat the pattern of clapping done by the teacher.
