Texture: Change



Goal: To hear textures by changing them in different ways.


Out of Tempo

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks a word staccato.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Change.”
  4. Students repeat word legato.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher speaks two words, both staccato.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Change.”
  4. Students repeat both words legato.

Advanced

  1. Teacher speaks two words, one staccato, the other legato.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Change.”
  4. Students repeat both words, changing the textures.

In Tempo

Clapped, sung, spoken, played in 2, 3, or 4 time.

Beginning

  1. Teacher claps a time signature in a medium tempo staccato.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Change.”
  4. Students repeat claps legato.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher claps a time signature in a slower tempo legato.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Change.”
  4. Students repeat claps staccato.

Advanced

  1. Teacher claps in a time signature with some beats legato and some beats staccato.
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “Change.”
  4. Students repeat claps changing which beats are legato and which beats are staccato.
