Triads: Landscaping
Goal: To speak, sing, hear the four types of triads (if there is an electric keyboard in the classroom use the organ, voice, or strings sound to create a sustained background).
Out of Tempo
Beginning
- Teacher speaks, “Root, third, fifth.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher speaks, “1, 3, 5.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher speaks, “C, E, G.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher speaks, “Doe, Mi, Sol.”
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
- Teacher sings, “Root, third, fifth.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher sings, “1, 3, 5.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher sings, “C, E, G.”
- Students repeat
- Teacher sings, “Doe, Mi, Sol.”
- Students repeat.
Advanced
- Teacher sings or plays two of the three chord tones on “lu” to hide identification of missing note.
- Student sings the two notes that are present.
- Student sings the missing chord tone along with the given chord tones.
- Student sings only the missing chord tone.
In Tempo
Teacher sets up a tempo, time signature, tonality, singing numbers, solfege, chord tones, one note per measure.
Beginning
- Teacher sets up a basic pulse playing triad x and prompts, “Sing the notes of the triad x from bottom up.”
- Students do so.
Intermediate
- Teacher sets up a basic pulse playing triad y and prompts, “Sing the notes of the triad y from top down.”
- Students do so.
Advanced
- Teacher sets up a basic pulse playing triad z and prompts, “Sing the notes of the triad z from inside out.” (third, fifth, root)
- Students do so.
