Triads: Landscaping



Goal: To speak, sing, hear the four types of triads (if there is an electric keyboard in the classroom use the organ, voice, or strings sound to create a sustained background).


Out of Tempo

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks, “Root, third, fifth.”
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher speaks, “1, 3, 5.”
  4. Students repeat.
  5. Teacher speaks, “C, E, G.”
  6. Students repeat.
  7. Teacher speaks, “Doe, Mi, Sol.”
  8. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher sings, “Root, third, fifth.”
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher sings, “1, 3, 5.”
  4. Students repeat.
  5. Teacher sings, “C, E, G.”
  6. Students repeat
  7. Teacher sings, “Doe, Mi, Sol.”
  8. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher sings or plays two of the three chord tones on “lu” to hide identification of missing note.
  2. Student sings the two notes that are present.
  3. Student sings the missing chord tone along with the given chord tones.
  4. Student sings only the missing chord tone.

In Tempo

Teacher sets up a tempo, time signature, tonality, singing numbers, solfege, chord tones, one note per measure.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sets up a basic pulse playing triad x and prompts, “Sing the notes of the triad x from bottom up.”
  2. Students do so.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher sets up a basic pulse playing triad y and prompts, “Sing the notes of the triad y from top down.”
  2. Students do so.

Advanced

  1. Teacher sets up a basic pulse playing triad z and prompts, “Sing the notes of the triad z from inside out.” (third, fifth, root)
  2. Students do so.
