Triads: Change



Goal: To hear and perform major and minor triads by altering them out of and in tempo.

Out of Tempo

Spoken, sung, played

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks, sings, plays a major triad and prompts, “Change the major triad to a minor triad before I count to four.”
  2. Students alter the triad within four counts.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher speaks, sings, plays a minor triad and prompts, “Change the minor triad to a minor triad before I count to three.”
  2. Students alter the triad within three counts.

Advanced

  1. Teacher prompts, “Speak, sing, play a major or minor triad and change it before I count to two.”
  2. Students alter the triad within two counts.

In Tempo

Spoken, sung, played in 2, 3, or 4 time slowly – one note per measure.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sets up a time signature and meter in a slow tempo and prompts, “Sing the notes of the major triad up and down along with my accompaniment and repeat, changing to a minor the second time.”
  2. Students sing the major triad and then change to the minor triad.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher sets up a time signature and meter in a slow tempo and prompts, “Sing the notes of the minor triad up and down along with my accompaniment and repeat changing to a major the second time.”
  2. Students sing the major triad and then change to the minor triad.

Advanced

  1. Teacher prompts, “Speak, sing, play a major or minor triad and change it in 2, 3, or 4 time, one note per measure.”
  2. Students alter the triad in a time signature of their choice.
