Syncopation: Layering



Goal: To combine elements of music with improvisational concepts.


In Tempo

Singing/Playing

Teacher landscapes a time signature and with varied tempos in two-four, three-four, four-four, or six-eight.

Beginning

Choose one syncopated rhythm and one time signature. Layer dynamics, textures and accents with call and response.

Intermediate

Choose one syncopated rhythm in a measure and add a non-syncopated to a second measure. Using the prompt "change" add and remove a tie across the bar line that connects both measures. Sing or play as a scale.

Advanced

Using the smorgasbord with call and response and the prompt, "change," go around the class room, one student at a time, varying the syncopation sung or played.
