Ties: Layering

Goal: To combine elements of music with improvisational concepts.

In Tempo

Singing/Playing

Teacher landscapes a time signature and with varied tempos in two-four, three-four, four-four, or six-eight.

Beginning

Ties are difficult all by themselves. So when layering them with other concepts and elements, layer one new thing at a time. This will be the best way to observe progress with ties.

Intermediate

Take a simple rhythm pattern and ‘tie it to itself’ over the bar line. Add crescendo/decrescendo and accents to help nuance the resulting syncopation.

Advanced

Combine more than one rhythm pattern within a measure and add a tie. Layer the rhythm pattern with a scale, melody, triad melody or seventh chord melody. Keep the tempo slow at first, then try the same rhythm faster.
