Intervals: Landscaping
Goal: To hear intervals without imitation by only using two-note intervals (and the use of an electronic keyboard is ideal for creating a sustained sound).
Out of Tempo
Beginning
- Teacher plays all eight notes of a major or minor scale sustained on an electronic keyboard.
- Teacher prompts, “Sing a major second* upward from the sustained notes.”
- Students find major seconds.
* Any interval may be used for this exercise. Using the minor scales add more intervals to the available combinations especially when using the harmonic minor scale.
Intermediate
- Teacher plays all eight notes of a major of scale sustained on an electronic keyboard.
- Teacher prompts, “Sing a major second downward from the sustained notes.”
- Students sing downward major seconds.
Advanced
- Teacher plays all eight notes of a major or minor scale sustained on an electronic keyboard.
- Teacher prompts, “Sing two different seconds from the sustained notes.”
- Students sing two different seconds from the sustained notes.
In Tempo
Teacher sets up a slow tempo but students keep the tempo going. The teacher does not add an accompaniment. Students sing two-note intervals, one note per measure or two notes per measure.
