Melody: Layering



Goal: To combine elements of music with improvisational concepts.


Out of Tempo

Speaking.

Beginning

Accelerando/Ritardando, Crescendo/Decrescendo, Compound Meter with Arithmetic, Patterning, Call and Response.

Intermediate

Crescendo/Decrescendo, Triplets, Scales with Arithmetic, Change, Smorgasbord.

Advanced

Compound Meter, Melody, Harmony with Call and Response, Change, Smorgasbord.

In Tempo

Singing/Playing

Teacher landscapes a time signature and with varied tempos in two-four, three-four, four-four, or six-eight.

Beginning

Each student adds a note to a melodic chain that starts with two notes. Layer each added note with a different texture and accent.

Intermediate

Using the smorgasbord, each student sings their own four note phrase forward and then in reverse.

Advanced

Choose a melodic pattern. Using call and response and the prompt, "change," each student sings the same melody but in a different meter therefore altering the rhythm.
