Melody: Patterning
Goal: To use differing combinations of four notes to hear, sing, and play melodies in sequential patterns.
Out of Tempo
Speaking, singing, playing, numbers, letters, solfege.
Beginning
Scale degrees.
- Teacher speaks, sings, or plays the melody "1, 2, 4, 3."
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
Scale degrees.
- Teacher speaks, sings, or plays the melody "5, 6, 8, 7."
- Students repeat.
Advanced
- Teacher prompts, “Speak, sing, or play the same melodic pattern in a different key.”
- Students do so.
In Tempo
Teacher sets up a tempo, time signature in two-four, three-four, four-four, or compound meter, one note per measure.
Beginning
- Teacher speaks, sings, and plays the melody "1, 2, 4, 3."
- Students repeat.
Intermediate
- Teacher speaks, sings, and plays the melody "5, 6, 8, 7."
- Students repeat.
Advanced
- Teacher prompts, “Here’s a new key, sing either '1, 2, 4, 3' or '5, 6, 8, 7.'”
- Students do so.
