Meter: Layering



Goal: Combining elements of music with improvisational concepts.

Out of Tempo

Speaking.

Beginning

Accelerando/Ritardando, Cresendo/Decrescendo, Compound Meter with Arithmetic, Patterning, Call and Response.

Intermediate

Crescendo/Decrescendo, Triplets, Scales with Arithmetic, Change, Smorgasbord.

Advanced

Compound Meter, Melody, Harmony with Call and Response, Change, Smorgasbord.

In Tempo

Teacher sets up a tempo and time signature in two, three, or four time or compound meter. Singing/Playing.

Beginning

In two-four time, layer a rhythm pattern, dynamics, accents, and textures with call and response.

Intermediate

In three-four time, use two rhythm patterns while viewing the accent smorgasbord.

Advanced

In six-eight time, one student plays eighth notes at the same time another student plays dotted quarter notes. Layer dynamics, textures, and accents with the prompt, "change."
