Meter: Call and Response

Goal: To present compound meters using social activities (teacher and students trade who leads and who follows with clapping, speaking, singing, and playing).

Out of Tempo

Beginning

  1. Teacher claps 1, 2, 3 and then claps only 1.
  2. Students do the same.
  3. Students clap 1, 2, 3 and then clap only 1.
  4. Teacher does the same.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher counts, “1, 2, 3.”
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “I count 1 and you count 2, and 3.”
  4. Students do so.

Advanced

  1. Teacher counts, “1, 2, 3.”
  2. Students repeat.
  3. Teacher prompts, “You count 1, 2, and I count 3.”
  4. Students do so.

In Tempo

Teacher sets up a slow tempo in six-eight time demonstrating both the 8th notes and the dotted quarter note, “beat.” Therefore students will be singing the 8ths and dotted quarter notes first, then one note per measure – the dotted half note.

Clapping, speaking, singing, playing.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sets up a slow six-eight time signature.
  2. Teacher prompts, “Here are six eighth notes per measure.”
  3. Teacher prompts, “Perform the eighth notes with me.”
  4. Students do so.

Intermediate

  1. Student sets up a slow six-eight time signature.
  2. Student prompts, “Here are six 8th notes per measure.”
  3. Student prompts, “Perform the 8th notes with me.”
  4. Teacher does so.

Advanced

  1. Teacher sets up a slow six-eight time signature.
  2. Teacher prompts, “You perform the eighth notes while I perform the dotted quarter note.”
  3. Students do so.
  4. Process is reversed: Students lead – teacher follows.
