- Students clap 1, 2, 3 and then clap only 1.
- Teacher does the same.
Intermediate
- Teacher counts, “1, 2, 3.”
- Students repeat.
- Teacher prompts, “I count 1 and you count 2, and 3.”
- Students do so.
Advanced
- Teacher counts, “1, 2, 3.”

In Tempo
Teacher sets up a slow tempo in six-eight time demonstrating both the 8th notes and the dotted quarter note, “beat.” Therefore students will be singing the 8ths and dotted quarter notes first, then one note per measure – the dotted half note.
Clapping, speaking, singing, playing.
Beginning
- Teacher sets up a slow six-eight time signature.
- Teacher prompts, “Here are six eighth notes per measure.”
- Teacher prompts, “Perform the eighth notes with me.”
- Students do so.
Intermediate
- Student sets up a slow six-eight time signature.
- Student prompts, “Here are six 8th notes per measure.”
- Student prompts, “Perform the 8th notes with me.”
- Teacher does so.
Advanced
- Teacher sets up a slow six-eight time signature.
- Teacher prompts, “You perform the eighth notes while I perform the dotted quarter note.”
- Students do so.
- Process is reversed: Students lead – teacher follows.
