Rhythm: Change



Goal: To hear, sing, and play the alternation of triplets and double eighth notes by using the prompt "change" through speaking, singing, and playing.


Out of Tempo

Beginner

  1. Teacher speaks, "1, 1, 1, 1."
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher speaks, "1 2, 1 2, 1 2, 1 2."
  2. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher speaks, "1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3."
  2. Students repeat.

In Tempo

Teacher sets up a tempo, time signature, and tonality, one solfege per measure at first.

Speaking, singing, playing.

Beginning

  1. Teacher sets up as above and sings/plays, “Doe Doe Doe Doe, Doedoe Doedoe Doedoe Doedoe, Doedoedoe Doedoedoe, Doedoedoe, Doedoedoe (triplets – not eighth = eighth), Doedoe, Doedoe, Doedoe, Doedoe, Doe Doe Doe Doe.”
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Same as above with an entire scale, using repeating solfege as above.
  2. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher prompts, “Sing a scale using repeating solfege and when I say change, switch to eighth notes, triplet eighth notes or quarter notes.”
  2. Students do so.
