Rhythm: Patterning



Goal: To use patterns to learn quarter note triplets.


Out of Tempo

Beginning

  1. Teacher speaks “1 2 3, 1 2 3/1 2, 1 2, 1 2” in the same pulse, but not in a tempo.
  2. Students repeat.

Accent the 'bold' number.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher speaks, "Doe, Rey, Mi, Doe, Rey, Mi/Doe Rey, Mi Doe, Rey Mi."
  2. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher speaks, "Doe Rey Mi, Doe Rey Mi/Doe Rey, Mi Doe, Rey Mi" and adds a clap on the highlighted notes.
  2. Students repeat.

In Tempo

Teacher sets up a slow tempo in four-four time signatures, singing the above exercise.

Beginner

  1. Teacher sings “1 2 3, 1 2 3/1 2, 1 2, 1 2."
  2. Students repeat.

Intermediate

  1. Teacher sings, "Doe Rey Mi, Doe Rey Mi/Doe Rey, Mi Doe, Rey Mi."
  2. Students repeat.

Advanced

  1. Teacher speaks, "Doe Rey Mi, Doe Rey Mi/Doe Rey, Mi Doe, Rey Mi" and adds a clap on the highlighted notes.
