Out of Tempo

Any in tempo improvisation can be reset in an out of tempo context.

Layering a discussion of a given element out of tempo is a great way to advance technique and awareness while preparing an in tempo improvisation

In Tempo

Ear Training 1

Combine accents, textures, dynamics and basic melodic patterns with call and response.

Using the prompt, ‘change,’ students alternate between major and minor scales using different rhythm patterns.

Create melodies based on whole tone and pentatonic scales, using compound meters and the prompt, ‘change.’

Alternate different retrogrades, inversions, and retrograde inversions of a tone row, starting with four notes, then adding more to the row. Use the smorgasbord for a model tone-row.
